Louis Domingue and the Arizona Coyotes took down the defending Western Conference champion San Jose Sharks with a 3-2 win at Gila River Arena on Tuesday night.
The lineup remained the same, with the exception of a shakeup on the defense. Head coach Peter DeBoer juggled the defensive pairings, putting Paul Martin and Brent Burns on the first defensive pair, followed by Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Justin Braun.
Patrick Marleau beat Coyotes backup goaltender Louis Domingue with a wrist shot from stick side to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead at 14:07 of the first period.
The Sharks outshot the Coyotes 14-6 and led 1-0 after 20 minutes.
The Coyotes responded with two goals scored in a span of 1:08 in the second period.
Brad Richardson picked up the puck in the corner and tucked it past Sharks goalie Martin Jones to tie the contest 1-1 at 3:42.
A little over a minute later, Lawson Crouse redirected Kevin Connauton’s shot past Jones for his first NHL goal to put the Coyotes ahead 2-1.
Jamie McGinn extended the Coyotes’ lead to 3-1 at 11:59 with a seeing-eye shot over Jones’ glove just under the crossbar.
Domingue made a spectacular glove save to preserve the lead with five seconds left to play.
The Coyotes took a 3-1 lead into the locker room, despite being outshot 23-17 in the second frame.
The Sharks pulled their goalie for an extra attacker with less than three minutes remaining.
Mikkel Boedker pulled the Sharks within a goal with just 12 seconds left in regulation, but it was too late.
In a battle to the end, the Coyotes held on for a 3-2 win over the Sharks.
Domingue made 39 saves for Arizona. Jones made 27 saves in the losing effort for San Jose.
