Harsh Words From Sabres’ Miller

by | Nov 13, 2011

Buffalo Sabres’ goalie Ryan Miller took quite a beating during Saturday night’s match-up against the surging Boston Bruins.

With less than ten minutes left in the first period, forward Milan Lucic skated full-speed ahead to the puck. Ryan Miller left his crease and skated to the puck.

And just as Sir Isaac Newton’s First Law of Physics states, an object in motion stays in motion. True to those words, the two hockey players crashed into each other.

“Well I blocked a shot, and it’s a race for the puck,” said Lucic. “I just put my head down and tried to get to it first. Next thing I looked up, he was out of his net and it was a collision.”

“Obviously, going into the situation like that, I’m gonna brace myself. I was going full speed so it’s pretty hard for me to put on the breaks.”

Miller went sprawling on the ice, but not before giving Lucic a few slashes with his hockey stick, throwing a punch to his helmet and then finally laying on the ice for a minute or so.

Miller was tended to by by the medical staff while sitting up in his net. A hair flip or two later, and he was ready to go. Lucic, on the other hand, ended up in the sin bin with the minor for charging.

After the game, an angry Miller sat in the vistor’s locker room a few minutes before brushing off a question about his health and going straight to the reason why he was talking to the media.

“I just stuck around because I just wanted to say what a piece of [expletive] I think Lucic is,” said Miller. “Fifty pounds on me, and he runs me like that? It’s unbelievable. Everyone in this city sees him as a big, tough, solid player.”

“I respected him for how hard he played. That was gutless. Gutless, piece of [expletive].”

Clearly, the net minder was not pleased with the hit. Lucic defended his actions after he heard what Miller has said by saying that Miller had left his crease.

Captain Zdeno Chara understands that those kinds of collisions do happen: “We want to play physical and we want to play aggressive,” said Chara, “…Obviously, those two guys collided… But, that’s something that will happen in games. It’s a physical game and those collisions do happen.”

After the Bruins were done physically hurting Ryan Miller, they started getting at him on the score board. The Bruins ended up notching three goals on Miller in the second period, Miller ended up leaving the game after the second period.

Sabres’ coach, Lindy Ruff did not say much regarding the health condition of his goalie, only stating that, “he’s got a little bit if a sore neck from the hit.”

The Bruins ended up dominating the game with a final score of 2-6, leaving Miller with his fifth loss of the season.
