The NHL has suspended Islanders defenseman James Wisniewski for two games for his inappropriate gesture made during Monday afternoon’s 6-4 win over the New York Rangers.
Wisniewski got into a heated discussion with Rangers forward Sean Avery and simulated oral sex at Avery. The gesture was picked up by television cameras.
“A lot of actions on the ice are regrettable,” Wisniewski said. “Ive been given a suspension from the league and I’m going to accept it and move on from here.”
As a result of the suspension, Wisniewski will miss the Islanders next two games at Washington on Wednesday night and at Pittsburgh Friday night. He will be eligible to return to action Saturday night when the Islanders host the Colorado Avalanche. Wisniewski will also have to forfeit two games salary or $79,268.30 which will be paid to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
