Cunningham, Gallagher’s Efforts Fall Short for Vancouver
Boston Bruins 2010 fourth round pick Craig Cunningham and Montreal Canadiens fifth rounder Brendan Gallagher each tallied a goal on Friday night in their Vancouver Giants 4-3 loss to the Kelowna Rockets.
Earlier this week, the WHL named Cunningham the Player of the Month for September/October. The Trail, B.C. native racked up 36 points (seven goals, 29 assists) in the first 18 games of the season.
“[Cunningham] works for everything he gets,” Giants coach Don Hay said. “He is a worker first and he really values work ethic over skill and that, I think, is what makes him such a good player.” – Vancouver Sun
Cunningham’s 37 points this year lead all WHL scorers, while Gallagher’s 30 (17-13) rank second.
Winterhawks Aronson, Niederreiter shine
Nashville Predators 2010 third round selection Taylor Aronson netted the game-winning goal for his Portland Winterhawks in their 4-3 OT win over the Red Dear Rebels on Friday, while teammate Nino Niederreiter (first round, New York Islanders) picked up two assists Friday and Saturday to finish with a plus-three rating on the weekend. The goal marked Aronson’s second of the year to go along with eight assists in 17 games this year.
Niederreiter has a goal and two assists in four games since the Islanders sent him back to Portland following a nine-game stint with the pro club.
“He’s excited about being back here,” Winterhawks coach Mike Johnston said, “he knows he’s got some things to work on and he’s also pretty excited he had nine games in the NHL as an 18-year-old.” – TSN
The Swiss winger had two points (1-1) in those nine NHL games and averaged just over 13 minutes of ice-time.
Niederreiter tallied 60 points (36-24) in 65 games for the ‘Hawks last year before New York took him with the fifth-overall pick.
