On Thursday morning, Delaware North Companies, the owner and operator of the TD Garden opened the Garden’s doors to members of the media for a tour and information session on the $70 million renovation project. The media adorned hard hats and proceeded to listen to Charlie Jacobs, Principle Delaware North Companies and Boston Bruins and Amy Latimer, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for both the Boston Bruins and TD Garden, explain the many phases of the renovation.
“Our goal is to really provide the best in class in terms of hospitality and in game experience for event goers here at the TD Garden,” said Jacobs.
The $70 million project, which is 44% of the price of the original cost of the TD Garden, will include a complete makeover of the concourse levels on 4 and 7 of the arena, an implementation of a high-density wifi and updated technology throughout the building, and a revamped dining experience, with an emphasis on local flavors. The improvements to the TD Garden are being made by acclaimed sports and hospitality architecture firm, Rossetti Architects.
The concourse levels will be receiving 90,000 square feet of new flooring, or roughly the equivalent of 5 NHL ice rinks worth of flooring. Rossetti Architects, which wanted to combine the style and history of Boston, the Bruins, and the Celtics into their work, modeled the concourse flooring design to that of the hashing pattern on the side of a hockey puck.
Technology plays a large role in the upgrade. The concourse levels will feature 29 video walls, which will display game feed, social media interactions, and corporate sponsors. There will be 8 digital wayfinding displays (think interactive maps), 72 overhead nanolumens LED displays, and all of the concession stands and eateries will now have digital menu screens. The addition of 400 antennas, including some in the dash boards (believed to be the first of its kind in the country) will help run the high-density wifi so that fans may access social media and use the TD Garden, Bruins, and Celtics apps.
Also getting a facelift will be the dining experience. Fans will still be able to get hotdogs and popcorn, but now there are healthier food options, with an emphasis on local flavor. Think fine dining meets fun dining. Fans will be able to enjoy seafood such as lobster rolls and fried oysters and clams, plus snacks inspired by Boston’s own Italian North End. There will also be numerous Craft Beer Bars which will sell local spirits.
Last but not least, will be the relocation and expansion of the proshop. The proshop will be moving to the second level of the TD Garden and will be expanding to nearly 6000 square feet. The relocation to the second floor of the building means that patrons will have access to it during games.
“There will be a complete redo of our proshop here on level 2,” said Jacobs. “It is going to be roughly 6000 square feet of brand new retail space, which we hope will really help better serve our customer base.”
The entire renovation, which started in April, just before the TD Garden’s 20 year anniversary, is slated to take two years to complete.
