The Dallas Stars have traded defenseman Ivan Vishnevskiy and a fourth round draft pick to the Atlanta Thrashers for goalie Kari Lehtonen. The deal is expected to be finalized after the Stars finish up their game with the Chicago Blackhawks tonight.
Lehtonen, a former second overall pick in 2002, is in the final season of a two-year contract and it is set to become a restricted free agent at season’s end. When healthy, Lehtonen has been solid, and is the Thrashers all time leader in save percentage and shutouts. At just 26 years of age he has struggled to remain healthy throughout his short career and has yet to play a game this season coming off of back surgery.
Vishnevskiy has only suited up five times for the Stars since he was drafted in the first round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He has eight goals and 16 assists in 51 games with the Texas Stars of the AHL this season.
