Mallet Is CHL Player of the Week

Hot on the heels of being named the Telus First Star of the Week for the week ending December 19th, Rimouski center Alexandre Mallet is the CHL Player of the Week for the same time period.

Mallet began the week with three goals, two assists, and the first star of the game award as Rimouski skated to a 6-1 win over Chicoutimi on Friday. He added another goal, two assists, and the second star of the game award as Rimouski edged PEI 6-5 on Saturday. Mallet finished the week a +3.

Three QMJHL Teams Makes CHL Top 10

When the CHL announced the top ten rankings on Wednesday three QMJHL made the cut.

Quebec and Saint John remained at third and fourth respectively, while Shawinigan moved up one spot to fifth.

Trade Winds Blow

The trading period began on December 19th with a number of players changing teams.

Acadie-Bathurst sent their 2013 QMJHL Entry Draft fourth round pick that they got from Drummondville to Drummondville for the Voltigeurs’ 2013 QMJHL Entry Draft fifth round selection. Jonathan Narbonne moved from Blainville-Boisband to Shawinigan for the Cataractes’ 2012 QMJHL Entry Draft first round selection and fifth round pick that was acquired from Victoriaville. Baie-Comeau sent Mikael Langlois to Cape Breton for the Screaming Eagles’ 2012 QMJHL Entry Draft seventh round pick. Alexandre Durette and a 2012 QMJHL Entry Draft first round pick acquired from Victoriaville moved from Baie-Comeau to Val-d’Or in exchange for Jean-Francois Leblanc.

On Tuesday Rouyn-Noranda acquired Acadie-Bathurst’s 2013 QMJHL Entry Draft seventh round selection acquired from Rouyn-Noranda for no compensation. Olivier Daoust went from Moncton to Gatineau, and in return the Wildcats received the Olympiques’ 2012 QMJHL Entry Draft third round selection acquired from Baie-Comeau.

On Wednesday Gatineau acquired Garrett Clarke from Acadie-Bathurst in exchange for the Olympiques’ 2012 QMJHL Entry Draft fifth round pick from PEI and a ninth round selection. Danny Chaisson and a 2012 QMJHL Entry Draft 12th round pick went from Baie-Comeau to Saint John in exchange for an 11th round pick in 2012.

Final Rosters Set

All of the teams have set their final rosters for the World Junior Championships.

Seven Americans will return from the bronze medal-winning team in Buffalo, NY in 2011 including goaltender Jack Campbell; defensemen Derek Forbort and Jon Merrill; and forwards Nick Bjugstad, Charlie Coyle, Emerson Etem, and Jason Zucker. Both Campbell and Zucker were also members of the gold medal-winning 2010 U.S. National Junior Team.

The Games This Week

In pre-competition play at the World Juniors on Monday, December 19th Boone Jenner, Ryan Murray, and Brendan Gallagher scored for Canada; while Teemu Pulkkinen added Finland’s goal in Canada’s 3-1 win.

On Tuesday Nikita Kucherov scored twice, and Ignat Zemchenko, Viktor Antipin, and Nail Yakupov added singles for Russia as they doubled the USA 6-3. Josh Archibald, Plymouth Whalers’ forward J.T. Miller, and Kenny Agostino scored the American goals. Sweden skated to an 8-0 shutout of Denmark; and the Czech Republic routed Latvia 7-1 in the other two games. Petr Straka, Dmitrij Jaskin, Jiri Sekac, Tomas Hertl, Daniel Pribyl, Petr Holik, and Tomás Hyka added the Czech goals; while Arturs Kuzmenkovs scored for Latvia.

On Wednesday Miro Aaltonen, Markus Granlund, and Joel Armia scored for Finland in their 3-0 shutout of Slovakia; and Brandon Saad led the way for the Americans with two goals, and Austin Czarnik, Bill Arnold, Emerson Etem, Saint John forward Charlie Coyle, and T.J. Tynan added singles in the 7-3 rout of Switzerland. Christoph Bertschy with two and Sven Bärtschi added the Swiss markers.

Devante Smith-Pelly had two goals; and Boone Jenner, Mark Stone, Freddie Hamilton, Tanner Pearson, and Ryan Strome scored for Canada; while Samuel Walser added the lone Swiss goal in Canada’s 7-1 win on Thursday. In the other two contests Latvia skated to a 5-1 win over Denmark; and Yaroslav Kosov, Nikita Gusev, Grigori Zheldakov, Ivan Telegin, and Nail Yakupov found the twine for Russia; while Dmitrij Jaskin scored twice; and Tomas Filippi added a single in Russia’s 5-3 win over the Czech Republic.

The pre-tournament schedule ended with two games on Friday as Johan Larsson, Johan Mattsson, Victor Rask, and Mika Zibanejad added singles as Sweden skated to a 5-3 win over Canada. Mark Stone, Brendan Gallagher, and Jaden Schwartz scored for Canada. Coyle had two, and Saad, Jason Zucker, and Jarred Tinordi scored the American goals in their 5-0 blanking of Slovakia.
