Thursday night, the New York Islanders defeated the travelling Edmonton Oilers 3-2 in regulation.

After Tuesday’s shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres, the Islanders got off to a great start when Islanders Defenseman Travis Hamonic stepped up into the play, and fed his teammate Josh Bailey the puck near the circle, Bailey buried the shot past Edmonton Oilers Goaltender Devan Dubnyk to give the Isles the early 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the Islanders the visiting team responded yet again, and the Islanders not only gave up their 1-0 lead to the Oilers, but fell behind in a matter of 8 seconds time.   Edmonton’s Taylor Hall would break Wayne Gretzky’s Franchise Record of scoring two goals in 9 seconds, by scoring on Islanders Goaltender Evgeni Nabokov twice in 8 seconds,  the first goal came at 15.52, and then a quick 8 seconds later Hall would score again at the 16 minute mark.

During the 2nd period, the time came for the Islanders to step up and answer, when Edmonton’s Luke Gazdic was called for a tripping penalty.  Consequently the Islanders went on to the ensuing Power Play, setup a triangle between Kyle Okposo, Matt Moulson and John Tavares, Matt Moulson would go on to find Kyle Okposo in the slot for a quick snapshot that Devan Dubnyk failed to stop, to make the score tied 2-2.

Later on in the 2nd period the Islanders would take the lead for good. Kyle Okposo and John Tavares would setup a “Give and Go”, Okposo would find Tavares in the slot where he would bury the puck in the corner of the net, and hit off the post to light the lamp, for the 3-2 lead.

Islanders Goaltender Evgeni Nabokov managed to hold the lead for the rest of the game, in large part due to the Islanders Defense holding the Oilers to only 8 shots in the 3rd period.

The NY Islanders move on to 3-2-2 and face their Metropolitan Division rival, Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.  The Edmonton Oilers move on to 1-6-1, and will continue on their road trip to face the Ottawa Senators on Saturday as well.
