The visiting LA Kings defeated the NY Islanders 3-2 in regulation on Thursday night in Uniondale, NY.
At the conclusion of the 2nd period, the NY Islanders had a commanding 2 goal lead thanks to Casey Cizikas and Rookie Aaron Ness, but that lead wasn’t enough to edge the late 3rd period charge by the LA Kings, who scored 3 unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes of play to defeat the Islanders.
Kevin Poulin who started his 3rd straight game was looking at a shutout performance against the LA Kings after 40 mins of hockey, but he fell short after Vyacheslav (Slava) Voynov, Tyler Toffoli and Rookie Tanner Pearson scored within 13 minutes of each other. The late Kings rally left the Islanders in a panic with under 2 minutes left in the game. Islanders Coach Jack Capuano decided to pull Poulin and the empty net to attempt to tie the game, but unfortunately for the Islanders and for Poulin, time ran out and the Kings left Nassau Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum with the win and the 2 points.
Ben Scrivens got the start and the win for the Kings, following Jonathan Quick’s injury in overtime during Tuesday night’s game against the Buffalo Sabres.
Both Islanders rookie Aaron Ness and LA Kings Rookie Tanner Pearson scored their first career NHL goals on the night.
Kings move to 12-6-1 and play the New Jersey Devils Friday night at the Prudential Center.
Islanders move to 7-10-3 and play the Detroit Red Wings Saturday night at Nassau Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum.
