The Carolina Hurricanes scored 3 goals in the second period which would prove to be enough to defeat the New York Islanders Saturday night at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Manny Malhotra scored at the 6:57 mark of the second period with a shot over Islanders Goalie Evgeni Nabokov’s shoulder to put the Hurricanes up 1-0.
John Tavares would score less than a minute later at the 7:51 mark to tie the game for the Islanders 1-1.
The score remained tied until the Hurricanes scored 2 goals within a minute of each other to put them up 3-1 with goals by goals by Jordan Staal at 13:12 and Brett Sutter at 14:09 of the second period.
The score remained 3-1 until late into the third period. The Islanders would pull their goaltender with early to get the extra skater then Alexander Semin would get an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at 18:03 of the third period.
Thomas Vanek would then score at the 19:35 mark to put the Islanders within one but Hurricanes goalie Anton Khudobin would shut the Islanders down stopping 15 of 16 shots in the third period and 38 saves in all.
Evgeni Nabokov who had won the last 3 games in a row would stop 27 of 30 shots in the game.
Islanders coach Jack Capuano said “We had too many guys that were nonchalant”.
Hurricanes Captain Eric Staal suffered a lower body injury and left the game in the second period. Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller said Staal would be assessed to see if he will be able to play Sunday against the Predators.
