Another night and another one goal game for the Florida Panthers. After the Panthers forced overtime, Maxim Mayorov scored the only goal in the shootout, and the Columbus Blue Jackets escaped with a 3-2 win Tuesday night, in Columbus.
Mayorov skated in and beat Scott Clemmensen clean with a quick wrister over the glove. It was the only goal of the shootout, and it was the Panthers, and Clemmensen’s, second straight shootout loss.
The Blue Jackets started the scoring in the first period, on Scottie Upshall’s 21st goal of the season. Derek Dorsett skated into the attack zone and hit Upshall with a cross ice pass. Upshall beat Clemmensen’s glove side with a wrist shot. Columbus controlled much of the first period, and took a 1-0 lead to the dressing room.
Florida got the game tied on a power play goal, early in the second period. Sergei Samsonov wrung a shot off the post, and David Booth followed up the loose puck and jammed it passed Steve Mason. It was Booth’s team leading 22nd goal of the season.
Antoine Vermette put Columbus back ahead late in the second period. The Blue Jackets threw chance after chance on net, and finally Vermette picked up a rebound and shot into the open net, next to a falling Clemmensen.
The Panthers forced overtime on a great individual effort by Evgeni Dadonov. Dadonov circled around the back of the Columbus net and put the wrap around attempt into the open cage. Mason never got close to getting back into position.
Florida ended the five game road trip winless. They return to action on Thursday night, at home against the Ottawa Senators.
