It was a positive ending in a season of so much disappointment for the Florida Panthers.
Bill Thomas got the only goal, and the Panthers broke a 10-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over the Washington Capitals, Saturday night in Sunrise.
In a game that resembled an exhibition contest for much of it, Thomas broke the scoreless tie late in the third period. Thomas managed to bat a puck out of the air, which squirted underneath Capitals goaltender Michal Neuvirth. Tomas Vokoun looked good and stopped all 28 shots he faced for the shutout and was the game’s first star.
Unfortunately, the Panthers went into the record books this season, and it wasn’t for anything to be proud of. Florida has now missed the playoffs for 10 consecutive seasons, and 11 years total (including the lockout).
Despite the loss, the Capitals still won the Eastern Conference and will face the New York Rangers in the first round.
