Alex Ovechkin’s 400th NHL goal was one of the easiest he has scored. With Washington up 3-2 and Cam Ward pulled for the extra skater, Ovie stole the puck in the neutral zone and streaked towards the empty net. Carolina was the better team tonight 5-on-5, however penalties are called in the NHL and Washington went 3 for 4.
Jordan Staal opened scoring in the first when he slipped one stick side low by Phillip Grubauer. Washington went into the first intermission down by one but with time left over on a power play. 41 seconds into the second they pulled even. Cam Ward wasn’t able to cleanly freeze the puck and Marcus Johansson was able to clean up the play. John Carlson put the Caps up one with a blast from the blue line. Carolina battled back, on a power play of their own, Riley Nash was the beneficiary of a rebound and tied the game at two. Minutes later Troy Brouwer tipped in the eventual game winner on a point shot by Mike Green.
After 5 days off the Canes are now in the middle of 3 in 4 and boarded a plane immediately after the game to head to Tampa.
