When New York Rangers decided to waive forward Sean Avery and send him to the AHL in October, it left the Dallas Stars below the league’s salary cap floor of $48.3 million dollars, forcing them to find a way to spend additional money. After scouring the waiver wire, they focused their attention upon Eric Nystrom, who had not played a single game with the Wild. Nystrom was looking for a team that was willing to take a chance on him, and on October 10th, 2011, their needs meshed beautifully..
Nystrom is the son of former NHL standout Bob Nystrom, who was a member of the Islanders’ Stanley Cup dynasty teams of the early 1980s. Nystrom has skated in 286 NHL games, scoring 23 goals and 28 assists for 51 points. To date, Nystrom has played 35 games for the Stars, tallying 12 goals and two assists while spending most of his time on the third line with faceoff specialist Vernon Fiddler and veteran speedster Radek Dvorak. He has found the chemistry with that line and been a great attribute to the Dallas Stars. He has not only produce goals, but he has helped the third line score important goals and be that important player that every team needs.
Nystrom fits very well on a line with Fiddler and Dvorak cause he provides that hunger from someone who wants to prove to the NHL that he can still play hockey and be physical presence for that line. When you put those assets on a line with Fiddler and Dvorak, you have one very hard unit to play against.
Nystrom has the leadership qualities in him, as he was team captain for the University of Michigan during his senior year. He is hard working forward who kills penalties, great depth player and loves what he does. He plays a physical with great speed and also a gritty penalty killer, who will sacrifice his body to save a goal from being scored. Those were the qualities that Nieuwendyk was looking for when they traded for him to fix their salary cap.
This trade for Nystrom has been a smart move by Joe Nieuwendyk. The Dallas Stars are glad to have him aboard and he is happy to play for the Dallas Stars. Nystrom is proving to be a valuable player to the Dallas Stars and for the long run as the Stars are looking to push for the playoffs.
