Senior center Nick Sucharski and junior defenseman Jeff Petry have been named co-captains of the MSU hockey team for the 2009-10 season.
Petry, an Edmonton Oilers prospect, was an alternate captain last year and will be looked to for his strong play as one of the team’s returning leaders on defense. Sucharski returns to the ice after redshirting last season due to multiple shoulder injuries. His return gives the Spartans a veteran center, a position that was sorely missed in the lineup last season.
The two players fill the role vacated by former standout goaltender Jeff Lerg, who graduated earlier this year. This is the first year MSU has had co-captains since the 1992-93 season.
“With such a young team, leadership is so important,” said MSU head coach Rick Comley. “We have 19 sophomores and freshmen in our dressing room, and holding off the vote until they had been through much of the pre-season training was designed so that the leaders had time to emerge, and everyone had their say.”
