The Lake Erie Monsters were in a fight for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference thanks to a dismantling of the Hamilton Bulldogs on Friday night. However, despite a strong game, they were eliminated from the 2013 playoffs.
The game was over midway through the first period as the Monsters scored on three early goals within the first 7:23 of the first period. The Monsters would then add a fourth goal at 12:50 of the first to chase Bulldogs starting goaltender Dustin Tokarski from the game.
The game remained 4-0 for the Monsters through the second period as the Monsters would then add to their lead with two early goals in the third.
The final score was 6-2 Monsters. The Bulldogs would score two late third period goals.
With the win, the Monsters had moved to 3 points out of the 8th seed with just three games remaining, however later in the night a Milwaukee Admirals win over Grand Rapids and a big win by the Rockford Ice Hogs who defeated the Chicago Wolves ended the Monsters hopes at a playoff spot.
“Its the same as what they are going through, there are things to play for, for each individual in regards to contracts, in regards to next year, and you need to have a good showing and when you are a hockey player you go out and try to make an impression and that is where we are at with the message to our guys,” Monsters head Dean Chynoweth said about the final three upcoming games for his team.
The Monsters and the Bulldogs had two different sets of brothers playing for each team, Marc Hagel and Joel Chouinard dressed for the Monsters as Kyle Hagel and Jacob Gervais-Chouinard dressed for the Bulldogs.
Jacob Gervais-Chouinard made his AHL debut for the Bulldogs.
