Luke Schenn will be wearing a Maple Leafs uniform until 2016. The 21-year-old stay-at-home defenseman announced today that he will be resigning with the Leafs on a deal worth approximately $18 million (USD) over the next five seasons.
Schenn, who played in all 82 games, scored a career-high 22 points last season. His shutdown defense, however, was the real reason the Leafs wanted him back.
Schenn led all NHL defensemen in hits last season with 251 and led all Leafs in shots blocked with 168.
The former first-round pick will continue to be the longest active serving member on the Leafs, entering his fourth season with the team. Had the restricted free agent not signed by today, he would not have made training camp, which commences Friday.
