How do you get a variety of women to donate a generous
amount of money during a luncheon? Dress up good-looking men in high-end
fashion of course!
On Friday, February 5, the Anaheim Ducks gave the women in
their lives a chance to shine as the Lady Ducks hosted their third annual
Fashion Show and Luncheon at the Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Coast, CA.
The event started at 11:00 am with an hour-long silent
auction. The silent auction featured such prizes as items donated by other
local sports teams, rounds at local golf courses, spa treatments, surf lessons,
and lots of Ducks merchandise. There was also a photo op available during this
time at which attendees could have their picture taken with various Ducks
After the silent auction had closed, the main portion of the
event commenced. As lunch was served, Ducks TV personality Kent French took the
stage, or catwalk in this case, and along with some help from E!
Entertainment’s Ken Baker, hosted a live, and very exciting, auction.
All eight Olympians on the Ducks roster donated a worn and
signed jersey from the upcoming 2010 winter games. One of the most dramatic bidding wars occurred over Teemu
Selanne’s, which ended up being purchased for $6,250. The total raised from the Olympic jerseys was over $20,000.
Aside from the jerseys, the most sought after item up for
auction was a guitar and singing jam session with both Bobby Ryan and Joffrey
Lupul. It was back-and-forth between two women and as the bidding neared the
$8,000 mark, Ryan and Lupul came to an agreement: they agreed to double the
prize if each woman was willing to bid $8,000. Both women agreed and another
$16,000 was raised.
After the auctions, event attendees were given the first
look at upcoming spring collections from Saks Fifth Avenue. Professional models
walked the catwalk showing off everything from business attire to club-hopping
apparel and after the models were finished, the real show began.
It was time for the players to show their stuff.
Eight of the Ducks players, including Selanne, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey
Perry and Scott Niedermayer, strutted down the catwalk
accompanied by children from the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, which
was the beneficiary of the event. From beginning to end, there were hollers and
cat-calls from every corner of the room, bringing new meaning to ZZ Top’s
lyrics “ Cause every girl’s crazy ‘bout a sharp dressed man.” Players sported
everything from Armani to Versace, while Roxy/Quiksilver donated the children’s
The room nearly vibrated with excitement as they all came out for one
last walk, bringing the event to close on an incredible high note. Players,
children and attendees alike could not stop smiling even though it was time to
leave: a true mark of a successful event.
