Isles Deal Roloson to Tampa

The New York Islanders have traded veteran goaltender Dwayne Roloson to the Tampa Bay Lightning for defenseman Ty Wishart. Wishart will be assigned to the Isles AHL affiliate in Bridgeport.

Wishart, 22, was the first round selection of the San Jose Sharks (16th overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. In 31 games this season with the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL, the 6’4”, 222 pound native of Belleville, Ontario, has four goals and 18 points. He has appeared in five career NHL games with the Lightning, recording one assist.

Scouting reports on Wishart say he is a good offensive defenseman but needs to improve his play without the puck.  The Hockey News ranked him as the eighth best prospect in the Lightning organization as of last spring.

The trade leaves Rick DiPietro as the only experienced NHL goaltender on the Islanders roster. Roloson, 41, was 6-13-1 this season for the Isles with a 2.64 GAA and a save percentage of .916. Roloson was often the victim of poor goal support this season despite playing consistently well. He will bring a steady goaltending presence to a Tampa Bay team that has scored plenty of goals but has struggled to keep pucks out of their own net.

The Islanders have not announced who would be joining the NHL roster to play goal behind DiPietro. The club returns to action Monday night in Calgary when they take on the Flames.
