IH Dynasty League Draft (Part 2)

There were some real gems in this last half and again showed their depth of knowledge. It also featured chances and some shots in the dark at a haymaker level. It also is the portion where sniped owners will lick their wounds move on to their backup strategies.

Speaking of sniped owners let’s hear some thoughts from those who had players snatched up before their pick:

Greenstein: “John did it three times (Henrik Lundqvist, Jack Johnson, and Peter Mueller), all with the pick right before mine.” Ouch indeed. King Henrik is a tough loss, but drafting Rask over Luongo could hurt a bit more.

Linsky: “I think Kevin sniped me pretty big on Pieterangelo. I was coaching and texted him that I wanted Pieterangelo with my second pick of the prospect draft only to be told he was ineligible. Kevin grabbed him in the veteran draft before I could haha.” Greenstein did a good job knowing Pieterangelo would be available, but he also felt that he may have reached a bit to grab him at pick 94. This meant missing out on known fantasy commodities like Ryan Kesler (#95) or Nathan Horton (#104).

Others planned on getting sniped.

Rosenthal: “I was in a position where I had the 9th pick in one round and the 2nd pick in the next round, so I came prepared with a plan A, a plan B and even a plan C sometimes.”

  9. 79. Anthony Curatolo, Anton Babchuk, CAR, Defense
  10. 80. Rich Gershuny, Brendan Morrow, DAL, Forward

Best Picks: Alex Linsky has to feel good about his third quarter of this draft. From Evander Kane (possibly the best name in sports and fitting to what his potential will be) to Anisimov to Hejduk, you got to like what he did.

Darryl Houston Smith also continued to build on his successful first half by adding another starting goaltender, Quick, and potential fantasy breakout forwards in Versteeg and Brouwer.

Kind of Solid…: Chris Wassel was able to pickup Downie, but may have reached a few times after that and also gambled on Smith and Rolston. I could be wrong, but one picks looks like an underachiever and the other looks like a pure rental. Not a bad move, but the future hinges on lots of offseason activity and the slippery slope of overpaying players during the offseason.

The end of a draft that goes 32 rounds was bound to become a pu pu platter of haymakers and shots in the dark. However, three KHLers, including the immortal Esche, may be too much of a reach when considering how important every pick counts is in this ultracompetitive league.

There were several finds at the end of the draft and some could be sleepers who step up to become fantasy gold. Coburn could be valuable as long as he can stay on the ice, and Langenbrunner can be the beneficiary of Kovalchuk and Parise’s sniping prowess.

Comeau could partner up with Tavares and become a 30-40-70 guy with a solid plus/minus. Given the lack of talent on Long Island, someone will gain fantasy value by hanging around Tavares.

Radulov is an interesting pick up and according to Kevin Greenstein Radulov could come back to the NHL this or next year and finally reach his potential as well. For that reason, Greenstein locked him up for four years. Interesting.

With the veteran portion of the draft complete, the inaugural prospect draft could be something dissected within this league for seasons to come. Philosophies take shape. Potential is not only a buzzword, it’s the greatest quantifiable value and near sole determinant of this eight round draft. Player situations were also considered by

Lets take a look at the power rankings following this deep dynasty draft (midway ranking in parenthesis):

1. (1) Darryl Houston Smith: Phenomenal veteran draft and a prospect draft with an understanding of how to stack the goalie position. A-pluses all around. This team has to be the alpha dog for seasons to come.

2. (3) Ben Shyman: Nice start accentuated by solid finish to the veteran portion and a nice prospect draft with plenty of talent ready to contribute as soon as this season.

3. (2) John Woolard: Fantastic depth upfront and on defense. Lundqvist is good, but the rest of the netminders are iffy. The defense group is very good. With a prospect draft including Subban and goalie Lehner, Woolard added solid depth and good talent.

4. (4) Anthony Curatolo: One of top groups of forwards that feature plenty of scoring and a solid group of defensemen that should be a serviceable fantasy blueline. In goal, there are three top goaltenders that will be good and should be among the top groups in the league.

5. (7) Alex Linsky: Solid beginning with a savvy second half and thoughtful prospect draft. There are some holes but there is some upside blended with some surefire fantasy performers. A good prospect draft with value on the horizon could push him to the top of the league quickly.

6. (5) Tim Rosenthal: Good talent. Gionta could experience a renaissance of sorts as he continues to rekindle the old magic with Scott Gomez. Comeau and Carlson should pick up where they left which can only mean good things. Good things ETA: 2012-ish.

7. (6) Kevin Greenstein: Solid start gave way to a less certain second half of the veteran draft. This team will benefit greatly from the prospects on the cusp of providing value.

8. (8) Brad Kurtzberg: Decent prospect draft. Nice group of veteran forwards. Questions on the blueline, but the goaltending could be strong.

9. (10) Rich Gershuny: Ovechkin is fantasy platinum, but outside of that only Matt Duchene has a chance to be “fantasy special.” One of the few cases of too many veterans and not enough top-level youth plagues this team. Maybe the Islander prospects will be valuable soon and they could provide an infusion of value.

10. (9) Chris Wassel: A passable second half of the draft until he went back-to-back KHL. A head scratcher of a prospect draft that depends on the success of the Devils farm system is hard to defend. Goalie will be a spot of strength and there is some fantasy value at forward and defense. Unfortunately, it would be hard to imagine this team winning a championship any earlier than 2013.

During the season, the IHFDL will be followed and be sure to check out power rankings, smack talk, reflections, trades, and waiver claims. In a league this deep there is sure to be pointers for all fantasy players.

Good luck to all and let the draft madness begin!
