Ice Hockey Fights: Figures and Fists

We all know that fighting is an expected part of hockey, but most of us don’t know exactly to what extent. We’ve all heard the joke “I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out” According to hockeyfights.com, there were 645 fights during the 1230 games of the 2010-2011 NHL season (and a whopping 117 games with more than one fight). It stands to reason that an adrenaline-filled sport like hockey would see its share of fights over the years.

Although fighting in the NHL has bumped up against its share of criticism, it is a considerable draw for some spectators. Fans expect it and the players deliver. While the NHL doesn’t really have its own version of boxing’s “tale of the tape”, we do know that the unwritten rules of fighting dictate that players only fight players of a similar size. Enforcers typically only fight each other, etc etc.
