The New York Islanders have signed veteran free agent forward Bill Guerin to a two-year, $9 million contract and center Mike Comrie to a one-year $3.375 million contract.
The 36-year-old winger scored 36 goals and 56 points last season in 77 games. He started the year with the St. Louis Blues before being traded to San Jose at the trade deadline. In the playoffs, Guerin had two assists in nine games for the Sharks.
“Bill Guerin, by everyone's account, is the consummate professional, the ultimate teammate. And beyond that, he's an outstanding hockey player coming off a 36-goal season,” said Isles’ GM Garth Snow in a statement released by the team. “The Islanders are extremely proud that Bill has made the decision to come to Long Island.”
“My family and I are so happy to be coming to Long Island,” Guerin announced. “Garth Snow first contacted me on Sunday and was so positive, so persistent right from the outset explaining to me why I would be ideal for his team. Ownership's commitment to winning at almost every cost and Garth making it clear to how determined he is to build a winner is why I'm an Islander today.”
Guerin has played in 1,026 NHL games in his career. He has played for New Jersey, Edmonton, Boston and Dallas before joining the Blues last year. He has 364 career goals and 719 points. He tallied a career best 41 goals and 66 points with the Bruins in 2001-02.
The Worcester, Massachusetts native represented the United States in the Olympics two times and has played in three NHL All-Star Games. In 1995, Guerin won the Stanley Cup with the Devils.
Comrie, 26, scored 20 goals and 45 points in 65 games for Phoenix and Ottawa last season. He also picked up four goals and six points during the Senators run to the Stanley Cup Finals last season.
“We really wanted Mike Comrie because Ted Nolan, the scouts and I were unanimous in wanting to bring his offensive production, creativity and competitiveness to our team,” said Islanders general manager Garth Snow. “At 26, Mike has already produced a lot of points and still has the potential to develop into one of the best centers in the game. I know Mike had a lot of options, but he understands the kind of team we're putting together on the Island and we're so glad he chose to be an Islander.”
The Islanders will be Comrie’s fifth NHL team. He has played a total of 386 games with Edmonton, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Ottawa before signing with the Islanders. He has 123 career goals and 262 points.
One reason Comrie signed with the Isles was his desire to be a top line center, a position he has yet to hold in his NHL career. Despite never playing on a top line, Comrie has twice topped the 30-goal mark in a season including a career high of 33 with the Oilers in 2001-02. The fact that the Isles also signed Guerin was helpful in bringing Comrie under contract, and the fact that Comrie’s signing was imminent helped Guerin agree to terms.
The Islanders announced two other deals on Thursday. They traded defenseman Allan Rourke and a third round pick in the 2008 draft to Edmonton for a second round selection in 2008. That gives New York two second round picks in what most scouts consider a very deep draft.
In addition, the Islanders signed free agent right wing Tim Jackman to a one-year contract. Jackman was scoreless in five games with Los Angeles last year while spending most of the season with the Kings’ AHL farm team in Manchester where he scored 19 goals and 33 points in 69 games. In 32 career NHL games with Columbus, Los Angeles and Phoenix, Jackman has one goal and two assists.
Earlier this week, the Islanders also added fwo other forwards, Ruslan Fedotenko and Jonathan Sim, further helping them to make up for the July 1st free agent losses of Ryan Smyth, Jason Blake, Viktor Kozlov, and Richard Zednik.
