Isles Sign Frans Nielsen

July 19, 2008 @ 10:37 PM ET

The New York Islanders have signed center Frans Nielsen to a four-year, one-way contract worth $2.1 million.

Last season, Nielsen split time between the Islanders and their Bridgeport farm club. In 16 games with the Islanders, Nielsen scored two goals and added one assist. He is the first Danish born and raised player to appear in an NHL game. With Bridgeport, the 24-year-old center added 10 goals and 38 points in just 48 contests.

Nielsen developed a special chemistry centering Jeff Tambellini at Bridgeport. With the Isles new youth movement in full swing, Nielsen is likely to see plenty of ice time this season and may have a chance to play with Tambellini at the NHL level.

"We're excited to have Frans locked up for the next four years," said Islanders General Manager Garth Snow. "We know he is going to come to training camp in great shape and ready to compete for his spot on the team."

The signing of Nielsen leaves defenseman Bruno Gervais as the only restricted free agent left unsigned for the Islanders this year.
