Is this the question Brian Rolston is asking himself these days? The Minnesota Wild have offered Rolston three different contracts but his agent has not respond to any of them. He has also put his house up for sale, which is on the beautiful Stone Ridge Golf Course in West Lakeland Township for $1.399 million.
Rolston said that the Wild have not offered him “market value” and he will not stay unless they do. This is a good sign that Brian Rolston is going to test the free agent market starting on July 1st.
The Minnesota Wild are very frustrated with Steve Bartlett, Rolston’s agent. General Manager Doug Risebrough says that they have not gotten a single counter offer from Bartlett and states that Rolston must decide how much he wants to stay in Minnesota.
“The upside is with all our young guys, Burns and Koivu. I believe that the core will continue to improve, and if the veterans that were here last year aren’t here next year, I have to find different veterans.” Risebrough said. “People can make choices. But I can even argue that Brian Rolston told everybody that Koivu is the guy to build around, so he knows that.”
Rolston said “These next few days are going to be big to see if I’m going to stay.”
Talks with Rolston and his agent are slowing down fast, so fast that the Wild have already received offers from other teams for the right to negotiate with Rolston on July 1st when Brian will become a free agent. If the Wild do not come to an agreement with Brian Rolston, chances are that they will trade the rights to another team to get some sort of value for him.
My take on this is: if your club has offered you three different contracts and your agent did not respond to any of them, you are planning on leaving town.
Wild Notes
Former Minnesota Wild player Wes Walz has taken a job as an assistant with new head coach Barry Melrose in Tampa Bay. Walz has signed a three year deal with the Lightning.
With their 1st pick of the 2008 NHL draft the Wild select defenseman Tyler Cuma of the Ottawa 67s. Cuma is an offensive defenseman who knows how to pass the puck and can show some offensive flair. A good pick since this is one of the areas that the Wild need some help in.
