Flyers-Oilers Exchange Minor Leaguers

June 06, 2008 @ 9:35 PM ET

The Philadelphia Flyers and Edmonton Oilers completed a trade Friday that involved two minor league players. The Flyers acquired defensemen Danny Syvret from Edmonton in exchange for forward Ryan Potulny.

Syvret, 22, split last season between the Springfield Falcons and Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League. Syvret recorded two goals and 18 assists for 20 points in 63 regular season games. He was loaned to Hershey on February 22 for Ryan’s brother, Grant. In 183 career AHL games, Syvret has recorded six goals and 55 assists for 61 points. He also has played 26 career NHL games recording one assist.

“Danny is a puck-moving defenseman that sees the ice well and will improve our depth,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said.

Potulny, 23, split last season between the Flyers and their minor league affiliate Philadelphia Phantoms. Potulny appeared in 58 games for the Phantoms posting 21 goals and 26 assists for 47 points. He also a played in seven games for the Flyers posting one assist. For his AHL career, Potulny has appeared in 88 games with 33 goals and 40 assists for 73 points. He has appeared in 44 career NHL games posting seven goals and seven assists for 14 points.

"When Potulny's name got on the table we certainly jumped at it.” Oilers Vice President of Hockey Operations Kevin Prendergast said. “We think he's a player who will probably be one of our best players in Springfield with a good possibility of being a call-up player over the course of the year."

Potulny was somewhat surprised by the trade.

"Yeah, I'm a little surprised," Potulny admitted. "Philadelphia was a great organization and I liked it there but I'm pretty excited about the opportunity in Edmonton. From what I hear, it's a great organization, so I was excited when I found out that's where I was going."

Potulny is ticketed for Springfield and will most likely spend the majority of the season in the AHL. Syvret has the best possibility of making the NHL as either a sixth or seventh defenseman for the Flyers. If Edmonton or Springfield decides to sign Ryan’s brother Grant, it will be the first time the Potulny brothers will play on the same team at the professional level.
