AHL Playoff Update: 5/7

The 2008 Calder Cup Playoffs have moved into the division finals and each team is looking to advance to the conference finals. Each series features teams that have the ability to win at anytime. Here's an update from around the American Hockey League.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins vs. Philadelphia Phantoms

Game 3 Summary: The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins came out like a team on a mission in Game 3 with an offensive attack that produced three goals in the first 20 minutes. The Penguins held the Phantoms to only two shots in the first period while taking the commanding lead. Philadelphia made a strong comeback in the third with two goals on 17 shots, and held the Penguins to only three shots. The comeback fell short as John Curry was able to stop everything thrown his way in the closing minutes. Lars Jonsson had two assists for Philadelphia, and Penguins forward Tim Brent was held pointless for the first time in the playoffs.

Providence Bruins vs. Portland Pirates

Game 5 Summary: The Portland Pirates are one win away from advancing to the Eastern Conference finals as a surprise team from the Atlantic Division. After Providence scored the game’s first goal, Portland scored three straight and cruised to a 3-2 win, putting the Bruins on the brink of elimination for the first time. Bobby Ryan and Geoff Platt each recorded two points, and J.S. Aubin stopped 30 of 32 shots. The Bruins now need to win two straight games, otherwise their season is over.

Toronto Marlies vs. Syracuse Crunch

Game 3 Summary: The Toronto Marlies knew that Game 3 was a must win. Lose and they are down 3-0 to a strong Syracuse team. After each team score one goal in the first, Toronto came out strong in the second period with three goals and added three in the third to cruise to a 7-2 win. Jaime Sifers, Jiri Tlusty, David Ling, and John Mitchell had three points each. Toronto got all this offense on only 36 shots, causing Karl Goehring to be pulled following the second period. Toronto was 3-for-9 on the power play while Syracuse was 2-for-8.

Chicago Wolves vs. Rockford IceHogs

Game 3 Summary: Rockford was facing the possibility of going down 3-0 if they were unable to win Game 3. Rockford threw everything they had at Chicago’s Ondrej Pavelec, hoping that he would make a few mistakes. Rockford used two power play goals and two points apiece from Martin St. Pierre and Kris Versteeg to win the critical game. Rockford’s defense was able to hold Chicago’s top three scorers without a point.
