We’ve got another great roster of guests coming on this week and as we do each week, we’ll bring you up to “The Press Box,” this week featuring Tim Panaccio of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Gare Joyce, author of the recently released Future Greats and Heartbreaks: A Year Undercover In The Secret World of NHL Scouts.
The Flyers were once again the subject of controversy this past week, when Scott Hartnell was suspended two games for a hit to the head of Bruins defenseman Andrew Alberts. This was the first game between the two clubs since Randy Jones’ hit on Patrice Bergeron that resulted in a concussion and broken nose for the Bruins star center and a subsequent two-game suspension for Jones.
While Jones did not appear to have intent to injure Hartnell’s elbow to the head of a kneeling Alberts did. Hartnell even acknowledged following through on the hit despite the fact that Alberts didn’t have the puck and was behind the play. Combine this with the previous incidents involving Hartnell’s teammates Steve Downie and Jesse Boulerice, and there seems to be a pattern in Philadelphia of reckless play and disrespect for fellow NHLers.
We’ll get Panaccio’s take on whether such tactics will eventually catch up to the Flyers, who at this point have indicated that they could contend for the Cup. Here’s some reaction from Panaccio, the Flyers and Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli at Hockeybuzz.com and here's Inside Hockey Radio Show co-host Kevin Greenstein’s take on the matter.
Gare Joyce is a writer on the masthead of ESPN: The Magazine. He is also a regular contributor to Christian Science Monitor, Canadian Geographic, Maclean’s, and The Walrus. Gare has won three National Magazine Awards and is the author of three previous books, Sidney Crosby: Taking the Game by Storm, The Only Ticket Off the Island: Baseball in the Dominican Republic and When the Lights Went Out.
Gare’s latest work, Future Greats and Heartbreaks: A Year Undercover In The Secret World of NHL Scouts is an unbelievable look into the world of NHL scouts. Gare spent a year following the Columbus Blue Jackets Amateur Scouting Department as they prepared for the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, and chronicled the inner workings of the process and key elements that they search for and examine in each prospect. This is a must-read for all hockey fans, and we will ask Gare about his experience researching for and writing this book. The book is available now at Amazon.com.
Brian Daccord of Superskills Hockey and the Goaltending Consultant Group joins us for another edition of “Between The Pipes,” this week featuring Jamie McGuire of McGuire Goaltending + Hockey Development. Established in January 2000, McGuire Goaltending + Hockey Development is a hockey training school based in Toronto, Canada that is focused on the development of students both on and off the ice. Jamie will give us take on the Maple Leafs goaltending woes and also discuss some potential NHL Entry Draft prospects that he works with.
Patrick King of Rogers Sportsnet will be with us this week as he takes us on “The Junior Circuit”, this week featuring Lewiston MAINEiacs and Kings goaltending prospect Jonathan Bernier. We’ll chat with Jonathan about his NHL experience with the Kings earlier this season and how his season is going in Lewiston. We’ll analyze Canada’s victory over Russia in the recently completed ADT Canada-Russia Challenge and the state of that once-great rivalry.
In the second hour we will bring you a story of courage and determination as Minnesota Wild forward Aaron Voros joins us to discuss his successful battle with bone cancer in his leg. Voros, a 2001 10th round draft choice of the New Jersey Devils, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of malignant bone cancer while playing at Alaska-Fairbanks during the 2002-03 season. Doctors told him that not only would he never play hockey again but that his life was in jeopardy. But after the Devils advised him to go for second and third opinions he discovered that his tumor was not malignant and had surgery to remove it.
However, Voros was not out of the woods as he suffered from a staff infection and as a result had to go through six operations. Voros battled through a long and hard recovery and returned to the ice for Alaska-Fairbanks the following season. Voros will tell us about his amazing and road to the show. For more on Voros’ inspirational story check out this piece by Michael Russo of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune.
Former NHLer, 1983 Hobey Baker Award winner and member of the 1984 U.S. Hockey Olympic team Mark Fusco will join us to discuss “Energy On Ice,” an All-Star charity game put on by Aspen Tech and Gazprom that will take place this Sunday at 2 PM in Bedford, MA.
Fusco is now the President and CEO of Aspen Tech, a leading provider of software and services to the process industries. Proceeds from this game, which will feature the likes of Ray Bourque and Igor Larionov, will go to the USA Hockey Foundation to benefit youth hockey programs in eastern Massachusetts. The funding support will focus on expanding hockey opportunities for young players who need financial assistance. Gazprom export is also creating a similar foundation to support youth hockey programs in Russia. For more information please visit
Gazpromexporthockey.com.
Also playing in that game will be former NHLer and Stanley Cup champion Scott Young. Scott now works for FastHockey.com, the web's leading resource for amateur ice hockey content and player recruiting. We’ll chat with Scott about his new endeavors and also look back on his career.
As always, Mike Wyman will take us back in time with another great edition of "The Golden Years." This week, we'll be remembering the legendary career of Eddie Shack. Shack played for the Maple Leafs' Stanley Cup-winning teams in 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1967. He scored the Cup-winning goal in 1963, claiming famously that he had scored the goal off of his backside and was only trying to get out of the way.
We'll also take a look at HDNet's Saturday night game of the week. This week, Joe Sakic leads his high-flying Colorado Avalanche to Tinseltown, where they'll take on former teammate Rob Blake and the Los Angeles Kings at the resplendent Staples Center. This is Sakic's 20th NHL season, and he's averaged at least a point-per game in all but two of those campaigns. At 38 years old, the star center would appear to be nearing the end of his illustrious career; the remaining opportunities to watch this future Hall of Famer perform on the national stage definitely shouldn't be missed.
Tony Marinaro, host of “The Montreal Forum” heard Monday-Friday from 10 am-noon on the Team 990 will join us in the final segment. We’ll get Tony’s take on the play of Carey Price thus far as well some trade rumors swirling around the league, including one that has Mark Recchi getting dealt to Montreal.
So if you want to get Inside Hockey, join us this Saturday and every Saturday from 2-4 PM EST for the Inside Hockey Radio Show. Remember, we’re on “Home Ice” XM 204 and the Team 990 in Montreal. If you don’t have XM or you’re not in the Montreal area, you can also tune in at Team990.com.
