Bulldogs Blanked by the Ice Caps http://insidehockey.com/bulldogs-blanked-by-the-ice-caps http://insidehockey.com/bulldogs-blanked-by-the-ice-caps#comments Sun, 15 Dec 2013 15:40:20 +0000 http://insidehockey.com/?p=54443

For the first twenty minutes on Saturday night the Hamilton Bulldogs played some good hockey, too bad the last forty minutes were some of the worst hockey the Bulldogs have played all season. The Bulldogs dropped their second in a row with a 3-0 loss to the St. John’s Ice Caps on Saturday night, as the Dogs were badly outplayed in the second and third periods and they looked like a team that was ready to pack it in the for the night after a dominating second period by the Ice Caps.

“They got momentum and we just couldn’t get it back” Head coach Sylvain Lefebvre said after the game.

In the first period the Bulldogs had a number of good scoring chances and they played some fast end to end hockey and out shot the Ice Caps 16-9, the Dogs clearly outplayed the Ice Caps in the first, but in the second, the Dogs came out flat and were just shut down by the Ice Caps defence who clogged up the neutral zone and limited the Bulldogs opportunities.

“In the first period we did get some scoring chances and what they got we just gave them in the first period and they had some good scoring chances but I thought we played pretty well in the first but the penalties killed us in the second period” Lefebvre added.

Being out shot 30-14 in the final forty minutes is not going to give the Bulldogs any chance at being in a hockey game and that was exactly the case on Saturday night. The Bulldogs gave the Ice Caps six power plays to work with and granted the Bulldogs did kill each power play off but playing down a man is also not going to give your team any chance at a win.

“The penalties killed us, the penalties just killed us” Lefebvre said about the six Ice Caps power plays.

Scoring the goals for the Ice Caps were Kael Mouillierat, Carl Klingberg and Eric O’Dell. Ice Caps goalie Jussi Olkinuora stopped 30 shots for the shut out.

With the loss the Bulldogs drop to 12-12-0-3 and sit one point out of first place in the North Division. The next Bulldog game is on December on the road against the Chicago Wolves. Coach Lefebvre thinks it will be good for Dogs to get out on the road

“We’re going to battle back, probably the best thing for us that is happening right now is that we get out on the road” Lefebvre said.
