Capitals Blow 4-2 Lead, Lose to Devils in OT

The Capitals were leading visiting Devils 3 to 1 after two periods. The Capitals were leading visiting Devils 4-2 halfway thru the third period. The Capitals lost to visiting Devils 43 seconds into overtime.

So what happened?

According to some Capitals, not much. Jason Chimera said after the game “We got a point out of it. It’s not like it’s the end of the world.” He elaborated three out of four points for the weekend was good.

Of the Capitals available for interviews after the game, only Joel Ward truly took responsibility for the loss. “Our line just didn’t get it done. We were on for three. We let one slip through. Our line just dropped the ball, and we were on for three which is unacceptable.”

Ward had a goal and an assist. Three blocked shots. Plus/minus of zero. Ward may have had the best game for Capitals.

So what happened?

Ironically, not the usual suspects.

The Capitals started out well. They took the first 7 shots of the game. Unfortunately, Marek Zidlicky scored a power play goal on the Devils’ first shot of the game at 11:26 of the first.

Goalie Braden Holtby looked sharp in the second period, stopping all 14 shots. At the post-game press conference, Coach Oates went out of his way to say the loss was not on Holtby.

Mike Green looked like… Mike Green. An assist and plus two. No penalties. One of his best games of the season.

The Capitals had four 5-on-5 goals. The Capitals entered the game leading the League in 5-on-4 goals (35), but only bottom third of the League on 5-on-5 goals (61).

So what happened?

The Capitals were outshot…again. For the season, the Capitals have allowed 35.3 shots against per game, the second highest in the League. The only take 29.9 shots per game, with Ovechkin taking an NHL high 5.2 of them.

Last night the Capitals were outshot 37-22.

The Capitals cannot win consistently if they are outshot.

NOTES

Aaron Volpatti played his 100th NHL game: 5 goals, 2 assists and 126 penalty minutes.

Chimera, Mikhail Grabovski, Ward and Alex Ovechkin scored for the Capitals.
