The Hurricanes found just enough offense and their defense anchored by goalie Justin Peters suffocated the red hot Avalanche 2-1 on Tuesday night. Carolina opened the scoring in the first with a rebound backhand by Jordan Staal and went up by two early in the 2nd when Nathan Gerbe found a streaking Patrick Dwyer.
Colorado cut the margin to one on a power play later in the second period. Paul Stastny was in the right place at the right time to poke home a puck that Peters was unable to cover. Justin Peters faced 18 of 19 shots that period and 33 of 34 for the game. With Cam Ward nearing a return, the solid play of late for Peters gives the Carolina coaches the ability to ease him back into the line-up. Ward went down with a hamstring injury on October 24th in Minnesota.
The ‘Canes are wrapping up a 5 game home stand on a bit of a hot streak (3-0-1) and welcome another Western Conference power, Anaheim, to Raleigh on Friday night.
