‘Canes Battle Back, Defeat Sharks 5-3

The Pacific Division leading San Jose Sharks are coming into Raleigh fresh off their worst loss of the season Thursday night to Pittsburgh. The Carolina Hurricanes came back to Raleigh fresh off an impressive win over Nashville. Both teams have played 6 games in the last ten days. Both teams hoped for a fast start to the game. San Jose to put the memory of last night behind them, Carolina to build on the momentum of their new found offense. San Jose got their wish and jumped all over Carolina with two goals in the first period. Tommy Wingels got the games first goal on a redirection of a Jason Demers shot from the left wing circle. Marc-Edouard Vlassic slipped one in behind Cam Ward on a pass from Joe Thornton, his 27th assist of the year.

Jay Harrison kept the Hurricanes alive in the second when he rifled a shot through traffic and past Alex Stalock. Harrison was also involved in the game tying goal early in the third period when Riley Nash cleaned up his rebound. Two minutes later the Hurricanes grabbed their first lead of the game when Jordan Staal made his presence felt after Stalock was unable to cover a shot by Nathan Gerbe. San Jose was not done. Justin Braun zipped a puck past Cam Ward glove side from the blue line and the game was again tied, now at three.

Instead of slowing down and playing for overtime, Carolina kept the pressure on. Andrej Sekera slid across the ice, found an opening and his wrist shot was redirected by Elias Lindholm for the eventual game winner. The first of Lindholm’s young career. Eric Staal added an empty netter with 30 seconds left to halt the Sharks attempt to tie it up with Stalock on the bench.

The loss marks San Jose’s first on the season when leading after two periods and Carolina’s second come-back win when trailing heading into the final period.

The Hurricanes head out Saturday for a four-game, Nine-day road trip that begins in Vancouver on Monday.
