BOSTON, MA – The Boston University Terriers defeated the Harvard Crimson 4-3 at the TD Banknorth Garden in the first game of the 57th Annual Beanpot Tournament. The win puts the Terriers in the championship game for the 24th time in 26 years.
The first period was completely dominated by the Crimson as they went to the locker room with a 1-0 lead courtesy of Michael Biega, and proceeded to make it 2-0 at the beginning of the second while on a 5-on-3 power play with Alex Killorn notching the goal. Terrier coach Jack Parker realized early that the game would be a battle, “They played unbelievably hard all game” said Parker.
On the other bench, Harvard head coach Ted Donato knew that Harvard’s early lead wouldn’t be enough to put away the Terriers, “BU is a tremendous hockey team.” His fears came true when Nick Bonino scored two consecutive goals to tie the game, the second coming as a result of great teamwork, “I just went to the net and [Gilroy] found me.”
After the game was tied back up in the third, Jason Lawrence blasted a slap shot from the side boards past Matt Hoyle to put the Terriers back on top 4-3, “Higgins gave me a nice pass and I just put my head down and drilled it” said Terrier hero Jason Lawrence.
However, if you ask Parker who the game MVP was, look no further than the Terrier captain, “Gilroy has been as good a captain as I’ve ever seen, And I’ve been here for a long time.” Though he only had one assist, Gilroy played a very strong defensive game and made the right plays at the right time.
The game got interesting in the final 7.6 seconds of regulation. After BU iced the puck, the Crimson had an offensive zone draw with their goalie pulled. It look as if Harvard tied the game in the last second, but replays clearly show the clock hitting zero before the puck crosses the goal line.
The second first round game will take place tonight between the Boston College Eagles and Northeastern University Huskies. The loser will play Harvard next Monday at 5 P.M. and the winner will face BU for the Beanpot championship at 8 P.M. Both games will take place at the TD Banknorth Garden.
