Per team sources, the Bruins have re-signed RFA defenseman Matt Hunwick to a multi-year deal.
The 24 year old showed much promise last season as a potential top 4 puck-moving defenseman. In 53 games, Hunwick tallied 27 points for the Bruins. Hunwick’s unfortunate injury (ruptured spleen) in the first round of the playoffs seriously depleted the Bruins puck-moving ability. Hunwick is known for his impressive skating, which allows him to make up for lack of size on the defensive end while also being a factor offensively. Hunwick’s signing leaves only Phil Kessel left unsigned for the Bruins. Once the numbers are released for Hunwick’s deal, we should be able to more easily deduce how much the Bruins could resign Kessel for and who, if anyone, would have to be traded to fit Kessel under the cap. Bruins general manager, Peter Chiarelli, has recently said (on NESN) that Kessel will be back with the Bruins.
More on Hunwick’s signing after the conference call scheduled for tomorrow at 5:00 pm.
