The New Jersey Devils placed left-winger Brian Rolston on waivers today.
The move, first reported by TSN’s Bob McKenzie, may signal the end to Rolston’s season with the Devils. Because of his 35-plus contract, Rolston’s full salary of $5.062 million counts against the Devils cap if he remains in the minors. The team can choose to put him on re-entry waivers, where a team can acquire Rolston for half of the salary. The Devils would still owe the other half.
In 15 games this season, Rolston has four points (two goals, two assists). The oft-injured left-winger never became the offensive force the Devils expected. Since leaving the Minnesota Wild to sign with the Devils, Rolston hasn’t played over 70 games or cracked the 30-goal plateau.
